For me, and I suspect many others, it was Bob and his family which transported us from the relative shallowness of the revival to the reality of the thriving tradition.

I have loved the Copper Family music since I found it around 1970. Eventually I met Bob when he began to cross the pond - he was a wonderful man. He took such pleasure in seeing people sing.

Bob had just been granted an OBE last Thursday, and had the chance to

I loved his book, and the tunes in the back with the harmony included were a formative influence.

I did A-level music and the rules of harmony we were taught there were stupid. This little book showed me that you could use parallel thirds and that TE did not necessarily have to rise to DOH.

An OBE is a medal - the Order of the Britsh Empire Mike. - it's a medal given by (?) the Queen for, in Mr. Copper's case, services to folk music. Very well deserved.

He was a true inspiration to me at a formative time.

What bad, bad news. We were lucky enough to open for the Coppers when they played the Freight and Salvage in Berkeley. Bob asked us onstage to sing with the family at the end of the night. It'll never get better than that for me musically.

Beyond his music, he was a sweet, warm, funny man, and one of the finest blues air guitarists ever, but that story is another night and another bottle of beer....

Condolences to John, Jill, Jon and the next generations.

I'll hoist a pint for Bob tonight.

Bob's writing and singing sums up for me that elusive quality of "Englishness". I've sat in the Social Club in Peacehaven late at night looking at the family's original songbook lying on the table among pints of beer, and I thought it was considerably more impressive than having the crown jewels spread out in front of you. The Coppers and their songs were the country's real crown jewels. Bob was just great. Read his books and listen to his records and give thanks.

A lovely man who did so much work for English folk song and always had a twinkle in his eye. I've just noticed that today is the anniversary of the Song Links concert at Cecil Sharp House, which was the last time I saw him. I feel privileged to have met the man.

I hope he gets some sort of memorial in the House, next to the one they're now planning for Fred Jordan.

Yeah, though "logic" says it will happen - somehow - we DID think that it never would, eh!!! Wonderful wonderful man.

His books are a GREAT read - and the songs a GREAT sing AND a GREAT listen!!

Many Australians were only introduced to him and The Copper Family tradition, in a delightful interview on ABC radio on Feb 22nd, 2003, with Andrew Ford - hope they replay it now ...

I was listening to the Spring disc from the Song for every season box set just last week. Some fantastic chat between the songs, especially when he ponders on singing certain songs at certain times of the year, saying it doesn't really matter "a song only needs one thing, and that's to be sung"

A man who always had time to stop and chat with everyone no matter how busy he was.

He's been there all the time, since I got involved with the music, and like the true greats of the scene, many of whom have passed on now, he will still "be there" for me for times to come.

I suppose we always knew it would have to happen some day, but it still came as a shock and leaves a sort of empty feeling and it's hard to know what to say. I have to admit that I first heard of the Coppers through the singing of The Young Tradition.

I can remember how in the mid 60s, three of us drove down for a weekend's camping in Sussex. Our main reason was to find Bob and his cousin Ron and to ask for the words of a couple of their songs. We went into the "Queen Victoria" Saturday lunchtime and saw Ron who said "You're in Luck, Bob's due to be popping in any time now". They sang us a couple of songs, before they had to go out and Bob told us to come over to Peacehaven club that evening. We had a wonderful evening, with Ron joining Bob later and then Ron suggested that we might manage another session in the Victoria the following lunchtime. Bob had let us copy any of the songs which we wanted out of a copy of "Brasser's" songbook and we went back up to London after a wonderful weekend.

After Ron's death it was a great relief when he carried on singing with the his two children Lohn and Lynne and later on of course with his grandchildren as well.

He will be remembered.

A huge sadness is bound to accompany the passing of so great a singer, and so great a human being, however long he lived. During my half dozen years living in Sussex, I was proud to count Bob as a friend. My musical memories of him stretch back to 1965. Sincere condolences to John, Lynne and all the family.

Bob was an inspiration to us all but the songs will live on.

I don't suppose ther are any singers in this part of the world who do not include some Copper Song in thier repertoire.

Sad news indeed. Of all the obituaries I've read on here in the last year or two (and there have been many, sadly) this is the first that's brought tears to my eyes. Bob was not only a singer, a keeper of the tradition and a thoroughly nice man, but his influence on several generations of folkies is incalculable. I - we all - shall miss seeing him at festivals. I hope he has a good time with Lonnie Donegan, Tony Rose, Sydney Carter and the rest!

Condolences to all the family and all those who knew him. Keep singing!

Unfortunately never met the man in person. It is only on the last few years I began to realize how many Copper songs we do, that have been picked up from many other diverse sources.

My guess is that he sought out Peter Bellamy. Of so many abiding memories, that's the one for me, Bob and Peter singing the blues together. Great mates and artists. If I get to the same place, that's the gig I'll queue for.

I remember, in the early seventies after I had read "The Book", going on a pilgrimage to Rottingdean whilst visiting my Gran in London. I just felt It was something I had to do. I shall go again next time I'm in the South.
The best way to remember him is to sing the songs!

I would also like to say what a delightfully gallant gentleman he was. I still remember him kissing the hands of all the ladies after the Sidmouth Song Links concert. His singing of "The Bonny Bunch of Roses O" will stay in my memory as the standard to be aimed for by any traditional singer.

That is sad news. I just had a few good drops on Bob and sang my way through a "song for every season". I bought my first Copper-record (Bob and Ron) when I was sixteen. On my first trip to England in 1982 I visited their Club but did not meet Bob. I bought the book from John and when he sent me the other two, John sent me a tape with Bob accompanying himself on Concertina. It was recorded in his garden and one sometimes can hear a bird sing. This is still my favourite tape in my collection. I met Bob a couple of years later, when I was there with a TV-team. He was such a great man. I will forever remember that morning when the family sang for us. It was so emotional for me, that the occasional tear came running down my cheeks.
A day after that I had to give a copy of that Video to Peter Bellamy, who was a friend of mine since I met him in the Copper`s Club. So I would agree: If there is a place like heaven, the two will already have shared a lot of songs til now.

The last time I saw Bob was at his 89th birthday party in Lewes and he was in fine form. There was a BBC 4 film crew at the party making a documentary about the Copper family that I believe is to be shown in the autumn.

My condolences to all the family. They can be proud of his wonderful lecacy.

Sad news indeed. The crazy thing is that during all the years I've been into folk, I never got to see Bob sing. I saw many of the other 'greats' - Walter Pardon, Johnny Doughty, Bob Roberts, Bob Cann, Fred Jordan etc. but Bob, no.
My sincere wish is that one day beyond time we will meet and I'll get to hear him sing. My condolences to the family.

The Copper Family songs that Bob kept alive and allowed to flourish.

The songs and tunes that might have been lost had Bob not had the foresight to collect and record them.

In his books, the wonderful words and anecdotes which brought alive the farming and country life of Bob's youth, and of centuries past.

Bob's skilful drawings and paintings and illustrations.

And memories of the man himself, a natural raconteur, always warm, and patient, and helpful - someone who made everyone he met feel better through having met him.

All these will live on.

I know I am very lucky to have caught 3 of Bob and family's visits to the States: a week at CDSS's Pinewoods Folk Music Week, the Folk Alliance in Albuquerque, and the Summer Solstice Festival in California.

What a wonderful, wonderful man, a joy to meet and to listen to.

A great loss, but a wonderful legacy from all he's done.

Bob's death coincided with that of Peter Ustinov and, the following day, with Alistair Cooke, so he has missed out on obits in the press I think. Have any been published?

The family members that came to prominance during the fifties are re-united. Expect some great harmonies from thse heavenly choirs.

I was at a sing around in Castleconnell (Limerick) on Tuesday (30th) and sang two Copper songs. Hadn't sung them for years. Just makes me wonder.

Celebrate his life by singing his songs and keep them alive. He was a great custodian of the tradition along with the rest of his family and friends of course.

Very sorry to hear of his passing though. Condolences to his family. R.I.P.

Bob had the main obituary in the Times of 1st April - 5 columns in the compact edition.

It was very well researched and accurately portrayed Bob's outstanding role in this country's cultural history.

Also, to clarify some of the messages above, the national award, or honour, that Bob received at Buckingham Palace last week, from Prince Charles, was called an M.B.E., or Member of the British Empire.

This is not to be confused with an O.B.E., or Officer of the British Empire, although both are different levels of award within the overall 'Order of the British Empire'. At the Royal Oak Folk Club in Lewes this evening a few informal words

I was so saddened to hear last night of Bob's death. He will be sorely missed by many, and I for one regret very much never having had the chance to meet him. English music has lost something irreplaceable, but at least he lived to receive his OBE, a long overdue recognition of his life and work. Condolences to all his family. May he rest in peace.
